JuJu

Mule25 yearsArrived 2022

Rescue story

JuJu is a beautiful Mule who came to us from Harmony Equine Center in Franktown, Colorado. She is such a sweetheart, but the stubborn mule side of her can also shine bright, given the chance. Since the moment she arrived, she has had our hearts because when she looks at you, you feel as if she is peering into your soul. Although we do not have her exact history we suspect that she worked hard in her early years. While she moves pretty good, her joints are swollen and arthritic. This means we have to keep a close eye on her during the winter months making sure she is comfortable and getting around in the pastures. JuJu is a special girl who enjoys being out in the Colorado pastures eating her hay and grain. She gets along great with the herd. We love that JuJu found her way to Silver Stables Ranch, where we get to love on this special girl each and every day she is here.

Care needs

Arthritic joint management, especially during Colorado winters. Special attention to mobility and comfort year-round.

Jorah

Mare32 yearsArrived 2022

Rescue story

Jorah came to us from Harmony Equine Center in Franktown, Colorado. She is currently our oldest horse at 32 years old. She does not let her age stop her from living a happy and carefree lifestyle here at the ranch. Jorah is a bit aloof and tends to keep to herself, but we have grown to have a special bond with her. She enjoys being brushed and for us to keep up on her beautiful looks. She also loves to be right up in our business if she thinks we have treats, and never turns down a chance to get a cookie. This frosty muzzle lady gets a special mash and hay to keep her weight up and to keep her happy and healthy. We love each day we get to spend with Jorah because she was one of our original horses and a founding reason we opened our doors to more animals in need of a cozy retirement pasture.

Care needs

Special senior mash and hay diet to maintain weight. Regular monitoring as our oldest resident at 32 years.

Sheik

Gelding22 yearsArrived 2022

Rescue story

Sheik came to us from Harmony Equine Center in Franktown, Colorado, with Jorah as a bonded pair. He came in with some fire, and it took some time for him to settle into the retirement life here at the ranch. However, over a couple of years, he has turned into quite the teddy bear. Sheik loves to come up and ask for scratches and enjoys spending time with us when we are down in the pastures caring for everyone. He enjoys being part of our group of equines and loves his hay or grass in the pasture in the sunshine. When he first arrived, he felt he had to lead the herd and show them around, but since the new arrivals, Sheik has decided he is okay with being part of the group and going with the flow. We love this spicy redhead, and he brings us joy every day.

Care needs

Standard senior care with regular farrier visits. Thrives with daily social interaction and pasture time.

Daffodil

Mare25 yearsArrived 2022

Rescue story

Daffodil arrived here from Harmony Equine Center with JuJu, who helps her around the pastures. Daffodil is blind in her left eye and only has about 50% of her vision out of her right eye. Don't worry — this doesn't stop her from being one of our sweetest horses. We don't know too much about Daffodil's past before she came here. We have learned since she has been with us that she loves to make friends with any new herd member that comes to the ranch. She seems to be the first one to greet a new friend and lets them know they are now safe here with us at Silver Stables. Each month we are grateful for her kind soul and we are keeping an eye on her vision. We are not sure how much longer she will have the little sight she does, but we know that JuJu will be right by her side leading her around the ranch!

Care needs

Vision monitoring and special care for near-total blindness. JuJu serves as her guide companion in the pastures.

Ginger

Mare25 yearsArrived 2022

Rescue story

Ginger was a very spirited mare when we brought her to the sanctuary from Harmony Equine Center in Franktown, Colorado. She was rather uneasy around us and aggressive towards the other horses. We knew she was going to be a bit of a challenge but there was something about her that showed us she was more fearful than she let on. As we spent time with Ginger, and she became a part of the herd, she relaxed a bit and took on the role of lead mare. She would constantly be on alert and even stood between us and the fence as we watched a black bear skirt our property. She is a tough girl with a sweet side that she shows to those of us who are closest to her. Most of the geldings can tell her what to do but all mares better beware. She is such a joy to be with and a real beauty.

Care needs

Requires patient, consistent handling. Thrives as lead mare with room to roam and a herd to watch over.

Scarlet

Mare19 yearsArrived 2023

Rescue story

Scarlet is currently our youngest mare and she came to us from Harmony Equine Center in Franktown, Colorado. She has a bit of a spicy attitude but we love her for it. Scarlet was well loved and cared for before coming to us, but because she had arthritis, she could not be ridden and needed a pasture to call home. That is where we came in, and we were glad to be there for her. We love that Scarlet found our pastures to call home because we don't ask for anything from her. We love that she can be the bossy queen she wants to be.

Care needs

Arthritis management and pain monitoring. Pasture life with no riding requirements — exactly what she needs.

England

Mare23 yearsArrived 2023

Rescue story

England came to us with a fury from Harmony Equine Center in Franktown, Colorado. She was very wary of people and had a lot of fear of humans. We knew she was worth the long road ahead of us. She would not allow us to touch her and even bit us when we laid a gentle hand on her back. This only made us want to give her more time and attention to ensure she knew she was safe here. Thankfully, Mac joined the herd and was her calming soul. Mac showed her that she could trust people and that we were only there to help her. We continued to show her love and kindness, and she loved getting treats. The day we were able to pet her nose was the day we knew we had done it. She felt safe and loved. She showed us why it is so important not to give up.

Care needs

Ongoing trust-building and gentle handling. Mac's presence in the herd has been transformative for her confidence.

Cyprus

Gelding21 yearsArrived 2023

Rescue story

Cyprus came to us from Harmony Equine Center in Franktown, Colorado. He was rescued with many other horses and spent over a year looking for a place to call home for his last chapter. He seemed to be in good health, but a case of laminitis made him unable to be ridden due to a rotation in his coffin bone. This is what caused him to be overlooked time after time for adoption. However, once he was here, we knew he was special. He can be saucy and playful when he is feeling spunky. He also loves to play in the snow and has found a friend in Scarlet. They often eat their meals together and have a special bond. We were lucky to have Cyprus find his way to us, and we love that he gets to spend his last chapter here at the sanctuary.

Caleb

Gelding13 yearsArrived 2024

Rescue story

Caleb came to us from a family in Tennessee after his first rehoming didn't work out. He was a championship jumper and had some impressive awards under his belt. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury that ended his jumping career. His previous family hoped to find him a good home where he could learn to be a happy horse again. After his first attempt at a retirement home, his family contacted us. It was not hard to see that he was upset and experiencing some internal struggles. He did not trust us right away, and it appeared he had been mistreated before he found our sanctuary. We slowly worked to gain his trust and allowed him to just be a horse in our pastures. As time passed, his joy turned to trust, and he began seeking our attention and affection. He is now a herd leader, taking his job seriously. We love seeing what time and love did for Caleb.

Care needs

Injury recovery monitoring and trust rehabilitation. Now a confident herd leader who thrives with open pasture freedom.

Rescue story

Midas is our only Mustang, was rounded up from the wild at two years old, and is our youngest horse at the sanctuary. For the next four years of his life, he trained hard, and it seemed to have more of a negative effect on him. Due to his past, his confidence is lacking, and he doesn't do well being ridden, which we certainly don't mind. If we are in the pasture or near the barn, he will find us and see if he can help with chores. don't mind. If we are in the pasture or near the barn, he will find us and see if he can help with chores. He is handsome and looks into your soul to make a strong connection. He is absolutely our most sweet and loving horse. We love having his young energy to give to our older equines. It breaks our hearts that he wasn't able to meet all of our other horses before they crossed the rainbow bridge — they would have loved him.

Penn

Donkey24 yearsArrived 2024

Rescue story

Penn and his buddy Teller came to us for a safe place to call home. Together, these two got into trouble their first night and escaped their stall to start exploring the pastures. Penn is a true donkey. He is full of spunk and is not shy about it. If we are moving too slowly for a meal, he will let us know he is hungry by shouting at us, no matter the time of day. He also likes to get the dogs going by chasing them through the pasture, then gives us the big doe eyes as if he did not start the chase game. Penn misses his friend Teller, but the large herd has helped him feel a bit better. We love having this character in our herd, and we hope to one day find another donkey companion for him.

Companionship is key — Penn misses Teller and would benefit from a donkey companion. Regular hoof care and dental checks.

Mac

Gelding26 yearsArrived 2024

Rescue story

Mac and Cash lived together for many years in a warm, loving home. Unfortunately, the owner had to move out of state and could not take them. They were concerned for their well-being, and a long ten-hour drive would cause the boys more harm than good. That's when a mutual friend brought this to our attention, and we were happy to bring them into the sanctuary. Mac is the clown of the herd and is so funny. We gave him the nickname of Napoleon. He is a bit small in stature but makes up for size in personality. The side eye he can provide is truly unmatched, and you can feel him judging you. He has settled in well and loves to tell us all about it. If someone in the herd is talking and making noise, the bet is on Mac. We are honored to be trusted with horses that many deeply love.
